The Great Little Madison

By Jean Fritz

Summary: James Madison was born in 1751 in Virginia. He was the oldest of twelve siblings in his family. Madison was a small and sickly child; he suffered through liver upsets that would last his whole life. Madison was accepted into Princeton University where beginning in 1769, he studied French, Latin and Greek; he also learned geometry, the history of other countries and algebra. In 1776, Madison ran for the election of Virginia House of Delegates. Sadly though, Madison did not win. That didn't stop him. He made the Council of States where he served for two years. Madison played many other important roles in the government. At age 30 he fell in love with Kitty Floyd. Madison asked her to marry him but at the last minute Kitty backed out. Madison rebounded quickly and fell in love again, this time with Dolley Todd. They were married in September of 1793. Madison became President of the United States in 1803.
Rating: I would rate this book a 3 out of 10 because there were a lot of government positions mentioned that I didn't understand. There were also a lot of dates and facts listed without really telling the reader the story of James Madison's life. I thought it was boring and I had a hard time finishing the book. This book made me want to take a break from biographies for a while.
